Save The Great White Shark
Share
The Great White shark plays a crucial role in healthy ocean ecosystems because they the ocean’s top predatory fish—they keep prey species populations at a healthy level and prevent algae overgrowth that advances the decline of coral reefs.
Great Whites are decreasing in numbers and are rare due to years of being hunted by man for fins and teeth, and often as a trophy for sport fishing. The White shark is often caught as bycatch by commercial fisheries and can also become entangled in meshes that protect beaches.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), 32% of pelagic sharks and rays are threatened with extinction (critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable); 24% are near threatened; 19% are of least concern and 25% are data deficient.
